A couple of firsts

I just realized I had some firsts recently that I haven’t mentioned here.  (On that note, please follow me on Twitter, Facebook, and Discord!)

So let’s get mentioning!

1) Earlier this month I made my very first micro fiction sale ever: Pythia, in Fifty Word Stories.  I’m also pretty sure this is my first ever 50 word story.  But not my last, I hope, because that was actually pretty fun to write.  So if any of you have a good idea for a prompt, drop it in the comments and I’ll see what I can do with it.

2) Also this month I made my very first game writing sale ever:  The Painfully Complete Alchemist, in the latest issue of TinyZine, a monthly ezine from Gallant Knight Games. Their flagship game is Tiny Dungeon 2e, which is quick and easy and all kinds of fun. If you like fantasy roleplaying, you should pick it up and give it a try. (I think it’s actually in a bundle right now, so it’s actually a super good deal.)

I don’t think this will be my last time writing for games, either. My little article caught the eye of some other game designers, which has led to some other neat opportunities. More on that later, I hope.

But for now, I need to get back to writing Mundanes before the baby wakes up.

Mormon Steampunk!

I have a story in a book that just came out this week.  It’s called All Made of Hinges: Being an Anthology of Mormon Steampunk, edited by James Wymore.  And check out the cover, by the amazing Nathan Shumate. Man, that ought to win some kind of award.

All Made of Hinges E-book Cover

All the steampunk! Twice the wives!

Steampunk, in case you are not familiar with the term is kind of a new genre.  It’s a sort of alternate history fantasy in which all the technologies imagined by Victorian-era science fiction writers like Jules Verne and H.G. Wells actually worked.

It’s also a culture and couture that involves gears, goggles, and sweet-looking guns. (If you’ve ever been to a comic book convention and wondered what is the deal with all the people costumed in a crazy awesome combination of corsets, cogs, and cowboy hats– well, that’s the steampunk crowd.)

The stories in this book are all steampunk in some way, and also are all in some way informed by Mormon culture, history, or doctrine.  For example,  my story (“Strange Pilgrims”) is about a Danish house-gnome who stows away inside the cargo hold of a giant iron juggernaut steaming its way west across the plains.  Then, he finds out he’s not the only one hiding here.

It’s quite an amazing collection of stories, from a variety of different authors– award-winners, best-sellers, and a few making their debut in these pages.  Here’s the table of contents, to whet your appetite:

Mere Pulp, No Less ... D. J. Butler
