1. Deciders vote
When I asked you all which haunted collectible I should write about for an upcoming anthology, the overwhelming answer was the Big Boy figurine holding the hamburger.  Delicious!
I’m already working on the story, and should be done soon.  Although I’m going to cheat a little and make it a piggy bank so I can fit it in a food truck.  Because I’ve never read a story about a haunted food truck.

2. Story of the Month
Our next story of the month is called “Strange Pilgrims,” which I just wrote for the upcoming Mormon steampunk anthology, Press Forward Saints.  The editors have have graciously granted permission for me to give my patrons a sneak peek.
In the summer of 1862, an enormous kerosene-powered juggernaut rumbles west across the plains, carrying all the earthly possessions of the pioneers walking in its wake.  It also carries two stowaways hiding in a cramped cargo compartment.
One is a restless house-gnome from Denmark, caught between new ways and old.  The other is a factory automaton on the run after emancipating himself.
Together, they fight crime.  Wait!  I mean, together they try to figure out their place in the world.
This was my first time dipping my toe into the waters of steampunk, and I must say I found the experience invigorating.  I had lots of fun putting together this story– as well as all the clicky little moving parts hidden beneath the surface.  Which I might share with you all as bonus content.

3. Updates
For the first week of February, I was at the Superstars Writing Seminar in Colorado Springs.   Great fun, and an amazing educational experience.
More than a hundred other authors, illustrators, podcasters, editors, publishers, and agents gathered to teach and learn and network.  With all that creative talent in one place, one of my favorite activities was just collecting signatures for some treasured books.  (I also got to do plenty of signing myself.)
I could talk about Superstars for days, but instead, I’m just going to focus on three things.  First,  I got to sit down with a friend and fellow author and get some work done on a Secret Project we are developing together.  Very high concept, very marketable.  I could really see this taking off and spilling into other media.
My amigo and I brainstormed, talked about how to manage the collaboration, and did some outlining.  We both have other things to finish first, so it’s going to be late this year or maybe next year before we can get to writing– but when we do, it’s going to be awesome.
Second, I learned a lot about newsletters, and I plan to make a lot of changes to the way I’ve been doing things.  You’ll really see that in May when year two of my Patreon page begins.
Third,  I pitched my work-in-progress to an agent, who asked to see the full manuscript when it is done.  I’m still a bit on the fence about agents, but this one is someone who has worked with friends and mentors.  So I’m thinking about this pretty seriously.
But first, of course, I need to finish the book!  So I’m trying to push on that pretty hard.  More on this in the next newsletter.

4. Accountability
After a nice tick up in January, my output dipped down again February.  It’s a short month, and I had a big trip at the beginning and a big trip coming up at the end of March.  So I spent pretty much the whole month either trying to catch up from the first trip or trying to get ahead for the second trip. So, not a lot of new words.
I did submit four stories for publication during the month of February, though.  That’s one a week, which is right where I want to be.  I got seven rejections back during the month, including one personal rejection.  Not as much fun as acceptances, but par for the course.  Feeling good about this.  I think 2018 will be my highest year ever for stories accepted as well as for stories published.  Fingers crossed!

Спасибо!
This month, I did a lot of thinking about three related things: Tribe,  Family,  and Love.  Given that February has Valentines Day in it, my guess is that I was not the only one thinking about love.  But it’s more than hearts and flowers.
Love is what binds a family together, what holds a community together. Because we’re not just trying to do what’s best for ourselves, but trying to help those around us achieve their goals, live their dreams, and become their best selves.
This is what Superstars alumni and instructors call Tribe.  (James A. Owen is a big evangelist of the concept of Tribe, but pretty much everyone there practices it.)  It’s the most important reason I am proud (and thankful) to be part of this incredibly supportive community.
I’m also proud to be building my own little tribe, including through things like this Patreon page.  I wouldn’t be able to do this on my own, and I’m deeply grateful to have your support.
Thank you for being part of my tribe, and for letting me be a part of your tribe.
